Irritable Bowel Syndrome & Anxiety

IBS is becoming a more widely understood and researched collection of symptoms. Part of the growing understanding is that it appears to be co-morbid with a variety of anxiety disorders, including generalized anxiety disorder (at least anecdotally). Research out of England is showing that treatment of anxiety and other psychological concerns can have a positive effect on IBS as well. Some people may see this as a challenge to the legitimacy of the IBS diagnosis, but I think the relationship demonstrates quite clearly the complex interactions between the mind and body.
