Sleep Medication & Mental Illness

From William Meek, About.com GuideApril 7, 2008

An interesting study is showing that fewer sleeping aid prescriptions are written for people with other psychiatric problems than those without them. Notably, people with anxiety problems with 45% less likely to get a prescription than people without a psychological difficulty. The rationale most common for this is that the anxiety is the problem not the insomnia, yet for some people their lack of sleep can make their anxiety worse. The report calls for more specific guidelines in this sort of treatment.
