CBT Is Not the Only Effective Therapy

Monday July 14, 2008
Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is all the rage in the UK. The British government made a commitment to train a large number of CBT therapists, but a group is now saying what anyone who has a deeper understanding of human beings than thought patterns knows: CBT is no panacea nor is it the only effective type of therapy. Thought CBT may not be the answer to every problem related to anxiety and depression, learning to skills of relaxation and other tools to address the symptoms that are taught in CBT therapy are essential, no matter what other issues you are dealing with. Therapist feel threatened by CBT because essentially most people can teach it to themselves. Instead of putting it down they should be thrilled that their patients are taking responsibility for their own lives.
