Some Scientists Back Brain Drugs for Healthy People
Sunday December 7, 2008
An editorial in the journal Nature is causing quite a stir in the professional psychological community. The authors (some prominent psychiatric researchers) are suggesting that drugs like Ritalin and other should be legal to use for healthy people as a way to boost their cognitive functions. It is important to note that 6 of the 7 authors have drug company ties. I am not in favor of this ethically and think that drugs developed for correcting deficits that may produce some sort of other gain are dangerous culturally even if they do not have detrimental side effects for individual users.
