Definition: A type of anxiety disorder where the person has an immediate and strong anxious response to situations where embarrassment could occur. It is common for people with severe social phobia to avoid social situations altogether or only engage socially when there is a group of trusted others present. Social phobia can also be generalized (relating to a range of situations) or more specific. This can be present for people with other anxiety disorders like generalized anxiety disorder.
