Definition: This is a type of psychological diagnosis for the persistent fear of specific things or situations. There are a variety of subtypes of phobias including animal (fear of spiders, for example), natural environment, injury, and situational. Specific phobias can occur at the same time as an anxiety disorder like generalized anxiety disorder. They are often treated with a form of behavioral therapy that helps the person overcome the fear.
