Definition: Psychotherapy, commonly known as "talk therapy", is administered by a mental health professional to help people overcome specific problems. There are many approaches, the most common for treatment people with generalized anxiety disorder are cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), which focuses on maladaptive thought patterns, and psychodynamic therapy, which is based on resolving deeper psychological issues that cause anxiety. Research shows that psychotherapy is successful for treatment of GAD, and it is often combined with medication.
